(WXYZ) — There were 78 new outbreaks of COVID-19 reported by Michigan health departments last week alone, the state said Tuesday.
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Dr. Joneigh Khaldun said the breakdown of those outbreaks came from:
- 31% nursing homes and adult care
- 22% social gatherings
- 10% workplaces
- 9% restaurants
On Tuesday, the state reported 669 new cases of COVID-19 and 16 new deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 79,176 and the total number of deaths to 6,170 since the pandemic began with the first cases on March 10.
Over the past two weeks, Khaldun said they have seen a plateau in the number of daily cases, but death levels remain low and hospitalization rates remain steady.
Detroit, Grand Rapids and Saginaw are seeing around 40 new cases per million people per day, while the U.P. and Traverse City are seeing under 20 cases per million per day.
Grand Rapids has seen a 2-week steady decline, which moves it out of the high-risk category. The Kalamazoo and Lansing regions have seen recent decreases in cases as well.
According to Khaldun, the state is testing an average of 27,000 per day last week, 5,000 more tests per day than the previous week.
As for the percentage of positive tests, the state is at 3.7%, and experts say 3% is the cut-off to be under for community spread.
Younger people are getting the virus more and more, with the 20-29 age group now having the second-most number of cases behind 50-59. The number of cases between the ages of 0-29 has gone up immensely in recent weeks.
